A brilliant squad effort

A hard fought game in testing conditions.

Having chose to play towards the clubhouse in the first half, old boys found themselves under early pressure and conceded an early converted try. This seemed to rally the old boys team into action and some good interplay between backs and forwards saw them attacking the cryptians line. With a break from Shaun Rayer who offloaded to frontrow Alex Davis, saw him power over in the corner. Matt O'Connor was unable to add the extras.

With Cryptians starting to gain some possession through old boys lack of discipline at breakdowns and using their set piece as a platform, cryptians managed to work their way over for another try, but the conversion was missed. Further misinterpretation of the referees decisions would cost old boys a further three points from a penalty. Old boys were awarded a penalty just before the break, which was duly put between the posts by Harry Williams.

The halftime score was old boys 8 old cryptians 15.

Old cryptians started the second period strongly and old boys were soon stood under their posts as cryptians kicked another penalty. This would be the last time old cryptians would spend any time in the old boys half as their backs started moving the ball across the line and with the forwards starting to make ground with some direct running. A penalty was awarded to old boys and the ball was kicked to the corner. With the line out secured by Niall Galvin, a driving maul was setup and the push for the line saw Shaun Rayer go over in the corner. The conversion was slotted by Harry Williams with a lucky bounce off the crossbar.

With 70 minutes on the clock and the score now 18-15 in cryptians favour, another penalty was awarded to old boys in front of the posts, the decision was made to take the points. James Locke nudged the ball over to draw the scores level. Ten minutes left to play and old boys had the bit between their teeth. Cryptians did well to stop the constant surges from both backs and forwards, but the constant onslaught of pressure finally broke the cryptians defence with Alex Davis crashing over for his second, in the 77th minute. The conversion was missed.

Cryptians were quick to restart, but old boys secured the ball and used their forwards to slow play down, with cryptians desperate to gain possession, the ball was knocked on and the game was over.

A special mention must go to debutants James Murphy, who looks like an exciting prospect at fly half and seventeen year olds, Spencer Miller and Tom Newcombe who played their first game of senior rugby and made an impact from the bench. Old boys also welcomed back James Locke from a six week period out due to injury.

A very strong squad performance and brilliant effort to come back from behind to grasp the win.
