A very good away win for Old Boys second team. With the return of some experienced players and a debut for new number 8 James McIntosh, the Old Boys squad looked strong. But it was the experience of the Drybrook team that got the first points with two quick tries.
Old Boys were caught asleep during the first exchanges, it took some good defense from James Murphy and the Old Boys midfield of Harry Williams and Aled White, who kept the big Drybrook runners at bay to get them into the game.
The Old boys pack then started to string some phases together from their strong set piece with big carries from Lucas Morgan and James McIntosh. From a penalty awarded the ball was kicked to touch. Accurate arrows from Adam Willis at the lineout saw a driving maul setup from ten meters out and Willis was able to crash over. The conversion was missed.
The second try came around the half hour mark, with some strong running in the loose from James Garrod and quick recycling of the ball to the backs, who showed their attacking ability with bags of pace and excellent hands and from 50 meters out, saw Aled White cross over. The conversion was missed.
Half time score was 12-10.
Substitutions made at half time, made an immediate impact with a huge hit from Neil Williamson from the kickoff setting the standard. Now with the majority of possession, Old Boys began to spread the ball out to the wings, but some basic errors and good last ditch defense from Drybrook, meant three or four chances went begging.
Loose ball in open play was pounced on by James Garrod and recycled quickly through the hands to James Locke from just inside the Drybrook half, he made the dash for the try line. He converted his own try.
Drybrook then came back with a converted try to retake the lead 19-17. But this was short lived, as Old Boys were awarded with a penalty for an infringement at the breakdown and decided to take the points, Locke duly converted.
The experienced Drybrook team regained their composure and started to press the Old Boys defense again, but the quick thinking of Murphy intercepted a pass and from inside his half to sprint between the posts. Locke converted.
Drybrook rallied in the final minutes, and their efforts paid off with an unconverted try.
Final score was 27-24 to Old Boys.
