This was the third meeting between Old Boys and Longlevens this season, and with Longlevens having won the previous two Old Boys arrived at Longford Lane with a point to prove. Poor conditions played a big factor in the game and ruined any chance of free flowing rugby, the rain poured before the game and made the pitch very muddy and the ball greasy.
The game started at a good pace and as expected was very physical with both teams putting in good hits on their opposite numbers and not wanting to give an inch, play did get stopped for a short wile when there was an accidental head clash between centre Ross Hannaford and the Longlevens fullback which resulted in the fullback having to leave the field. The first score of the game went to the hosts around the 15 minute mark which came from an error at the Old Boys line-out, Longlevens turned the ball over at the tail and after a number of phases managed to get in at the corner, a good touchline conversion made the scores 7-0.
Crucially, the next score went to Old Boys, some dog from the forwards in midfield gave an overlap out wide and good hands from the backs gave fullback Aled White the space out wide to run it in from 30 metres out, and with usual kicker Curtis Neal sidelined Aled stepped up and converted his own try from the 15, the score remained 7-7 until half time.
Old Boys started the second half stronger and we're awarded a penalty a couple of minutes into the half within range and Aled White stepped up again to give old boys the lead 10-7, but the lead was short lived as Longlevens replied not long after with their second converted try to give them a 14-7 lead.
Handling errors became more prominent as the second half went on from both teams as the pitch got worse and hands got colder, and with 15 minutes left on the clock Old Boys knew they had to step it up a gear to come away with the win. Old Boys had a line-out on the opposition 22 and set up with maul and drove Longlevens back 20 metres and we're illegally bought down by the Longlevens pack but we're not awarded the penalty try. From the resulting penalty Old Boys went back into the corner but we're not as successful with the line-out this time, Longlevens managed to clear their lines but Old Boys went straight back onto the attack, which in the end resulted in a yellow card being shown to Longlevens second row J. Weatherley for not rolling away at the breakdown. Old Boys went back into the corner again which turned out to be a pivotal moment in the game. From the line-out drive some handbags started off the ball between Old Boys prop Conrad Jones and Longlevens scrum half Mike Hagan which resulted in Hagan being shown a red card for punching and meant Longlevens would have to play the rest of the game with 13 men. Old Boys decided to take the scrum 5 metres out, and after a couple of phases replacement back row Dean Cooper managed to use the conditions to his favour and slide over the line to give Old Boys what turned out to be the match winning try, Josh Young could not add the extras and Old Boys we're up 15-14 with minutes left on the clock. The drama was not done yet though, Longlevens managed to get the ball back from the resulting kick off and we're awarded a penalty by the referee with 2 minutes left on the clock, with usual kicker Hagan off the pitch fly half Broady stepped up but could not convert. After the kick there still remained 10 seconds on the clock which was enough time for the 22, after a couple of phases Longlevens knocked on in midfield giving old boys the win!
